Traveling With Kids

With summer upon us, we have got our minds on vacation. But how do we keep our kids entertained during a long car or plane ride? Here are a few of our favorite tips!

Snacks!

Add a variety of snacks to a Bento box or a box like the one pictured. Sweet, salty, and everything in between. The variety will help keep things fun and you won't be digging for the next snacks constantly!

Toys

Pick up a few fidget spinners with suction cups to attach to car or plane windows for babies or toddlers to play with. These can provide entertainment for quite some time!

If your child likes Magnatiles or Lego/Duplos, bring some along! Pack them in a soft-sided lunch box. This is a place to store them, keeps them all together during travel, and makes sure that there are just enough!

For Lego, we add in a few small plastic Tupperware containers. This keeps certain pieces together or is a place to store that masterpiece that must be kept for awhile!

Surprises

Pick up a few small items from the dollar store or a few toys that haven't been played with at home for awhile. Wrap them in tissue paper or foil (depending on age.) Now you've got fun little surprises to hand out during the trip.

Bonus! The unwrapping is an activity in itself.

Tried and True

We asked the mamas in our village for their tried and true travel tips. Here are some of them!

  • If you're on a red-eye flight or driving overnight, make sure to put little ones in a nighttime diaper. They are more absorbent and hopefully your baby will sleep through the ride!

  • A tablet or iPad with educational games can help everyone keep their sanity and is something to break up the time.

  • A change of clothes for everyone! Blowouts happen often during travel.

  • Plane Specific

    • Bring a small pack of disinfecting wipes. Wipe down everything before and after. You never know what your child will touch!

    • International Trips

      • Request an infant bassinet/skycot right after you book your flight. They are first come, first serve.

      • For toddlers, check to see if the plane allows FlyAway or a similar inflatable toddler bed. They inflate in the seat!

    • For diaper changes, pack a few Ziploc bags with a few wipes, a diaper, and a onesie so that you don’t have to carry a whole diaper bag into the bathroom.

    • If you are checking a car seat, put extra diapers and bulky clothing into the bag that the car seat is in!

Enjoy!

Most of all, try to relax and enjoy this time with your family!
